Source citations
Every answer a ChatHQ assistant gives is linked to the passages in your knowledge base it was built from. You never have to wonder where a reply came from.
Where you see the sources
- In your workspace — Open the assistant and use the test chat. Each answer lists the sources it used, so you can read the passage, confirm the answer and jump to the content source if it needs editing.
- Through the API — Every response includes a
citationsarray. Each citation carries the source id, the excerpt that supported the answer, a relevance score and metadata such as the document title and page. See the REST API. - On your website — Visitors see a clean answer. Citations are not displayed inside the embedded widget, so your public chat stays readable while your team keeps full traceability behind it.
Why it matters
- You can verify an answer — Instead of trusting the assistant, read the passage it relied on.
- You can fix the cause — When an answer is wrong, the citation shows which document led to it. Update that document and the next answer improves.
- You can audit conversations — Citations are stored with each turn, so a reply from last month can still be traced to its source.
Tips for useful citations
- Give files and pages clear titles. The title is what appears in the citation metadata.
- Keep one topic per document where you can. A citation pointing to a focused document is easier to act on than one pointing into a 200-page manual.
- Remove outdated documents rather than leaving them next to the current version. Otherwise the assistant may cite the old one.
